SINGING LESSONS: Developing a good vocal technique is an important part of a singer's progress.

The lessons begin with breathing exercises and vocal exercises which help warm the muscles in preparation for singing.  The exercises are designed to work through the different muscle groups that are used in singing.

The lessons continue with time spent working on current songs.

As a beginner a pupil will study some simple folk songs; but soon a wider variety of styles are sung, including lieder, arias and art songs with piano accompaniment.

Classical singers often sing in different languages, in particular Italian, German and French.  Songs in all these languages may be studied.

Pupils may also learn to sing Theatre Music (show songs), which are usually sung in English.

All these styles of song may be used in due course as part of the syllabus studied for ABRSM singing examinations, which pupils are encouraged to take.

SINGING EXAMINATIONS: The ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) offers exams at Grades 1 to 8.

Advanced pupils may take a diploma examination (Dip ABRSM).

These examinations help to give direction to pupils in their vocal studies.  They are also a good indicator of how a pupil is progressing.

In the higher grades UCCA points are awarded for ABRSM examinations passed.

SIGHT-SINGING: This is an important part of a singer's development.  (This is reflected in the ABRSM examinations).

A sight-singing class is held at 6.00 (half an hour before the weekly choir rehearsal) on Wednesdays in order to develop this skill.

CONCERTS: Concerts are frequently organised for pupils in order to give performing experience.

The concerts often take place at  The Old Granary Studio at Maypole Green, in Toft Monks.
