SINGING LESSONS: Developing a sound vocal technique is an important part of a classical singer's progress.

Lessons begin with breathing and vocal exercises that are designed to work on the muscle groups that are used in singing.

Sight-singing is also studied during the lesson.

Beginners may sing some simple folk songs; but soon a wider variety of styles are sung, depending on the interest of the pupil. These can include songs from the shows, operatic arias or Lieder, (art songs) with piano accompaniment.

Classical singers often sing in different languages, in particular Italian, German and French.  If pupils wish to they may study songs in all these languages.

All these styles of song can be used as part of the syllabus studied for ABRSM singing examinations.  Many of Mary's pupils prepare for these examinations.

SINGING EXAMINATIONS: The ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music

offers exams at Grades 1 to 8.

Advanced pupils may take a diploma examination (Dip ABRSM).

The examinations help give direction to pupils in their vocal studies and are a good indicator of how a pupil is progressing.

Following government accreditation of ABRSM graded music exams, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (visit the UCAS website) include Grades 6-8 in the tariff for UK university and college entrance.

At the discretion of individual institutions, students may benefit from point recommendations.
